Me: This is amazing. It’s almost not even fair.
Max: Yes it is. We work for this. We took the risk.
Standing on top of a mountain overlooking a beautiful lakeand small Mexican town, I listened to the words Max said and thought, “He’s right, this is the life we chose.”
But then, I grew sad.
I was sad for my mom and my friends back home in the cold. I wished they could be with us at that very moment– drinking a beer on top of La Pena on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
“Why don’t more people do this?” I thought to myself. “If only they knew how POSSIBLE it really is.”
Later on that same day, a friend of mine posted on Facebook about quitting her job and moving to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of being a writer. She had all but committed but was feeling the fear of actually taking that step.
I commented and said that if she didn’t do it now, then she’d never know.
Yes. It’s scary. It’s terrifying each and every time, but you have to take that leap. I jumped two years ago and it was the best decision I ever made (and yes, I cried the night before I moved to Asia in fear that I was making a mistake).
I just wrote an email to another friend I ran into when I was visiting home a few months ago to follow up on our conversation on the Four Hour Work Week. She was in the midst of reading it when I saw her and I told her that was the book that started me on my journey.
I wanted to provide her with more resources and support if she chooses to take the leap and pursue this life.
It’s hard to give someone advice on their life that is so contrarian to everything they’ve been led to believe. It’s a lot of responsibility and it’s not my place to tell people what to do. I’m just an example of someone who took the leap and is making it work.
My cousin commented on my Instagram a few days ago and said “What is this life you’re living, Derek?”
The real answer is exactly the life I designed. I am no where near where I want to be. But I’m working towards it each and every day.
We all have a choice. I don’t think any choice is better than another because it depends on what you want and what you’re willing to work for. But do believe, that the choice is yours.
It’s not easy, but it is simple. Are you living the life you want to be living? If not, then make a change.
